Stenosis of the colon following acute pancreatitis.

چکیده
Introduction Acute pancreatitis is followed by complications in between 12% (Trapnell, 1971) and 38% (Lukash, 1967) of cases. Colonic complications are rare but include spasm (Schwartz and Nadelhaft, 1957), stenosis with or without obstruction (Miln and Barclay, 1952), pancreatico-colonic fistula (Berne and Edmondson, 1966), necrosis (Katz, Dorman and Aufses, 1974) and perforation (Gatch and Brickley, 1951). Colonic stenosis following acute pancreatitis was first described by Forlini in 1927 and three cases have subsequently been reported from Great Britain.

Sub-serosal necrosis of the colon in acute pancreatitis.
As the treatment of acute pancreatitis is mainly conservative, the incidence of colonic involvement following this condition is unknown. Rarely, complications of stenosis, necrosis and fistula formation arise. We report a case in which torrential venous haemorrhage occurring three days after the onset of traumatic pancreatitis necessitated laparotomy. At operation a right hemicolectomy was perf...

A case is described demonstrating a stricture of the colon associated with acute pancreatitis and 20 similar cases found in the literature are reviewed. The colonic stenosis may be of short duration and largely due to oedema or more chronic with deposition of fibrous tissue. Many cases have been confused with a carcinoma both radiologically and at laparotomy. It is suggested that a conservative...
